Rosetta Shop

Website and order-management support for the Rosetta Shop, an online merchandise initiative connected to ESA’s Rosetta and Philae comet mission. The work combined e-commerce administration, customer-order coordination and day-to-day website management during a period of high public interest in the mission.
Overview
Rosetta Shop was an online shop associated with the European Space Agency’s Rosetta mission and its Philae comet lander.
The initiative gave members of the public a way to engage with one of Europe’s most widely followed space-science missions through mission-related products and merchandise. My role focused on the practical digital operations that made the shop work: maintaining the website, keeping product information current and managing customer orders.
Rosetta was ESA’s comet-chasing mission to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. It delivered the Philae lander to the comet’s surface as part of the first detailed in-situ investigation of a cometary nucleus. [web:240]
The context
Rosetta and Philae captured public attention by bringing a complex, long-duration space mission into everyday conversation.
The mission combined striking scientific imagery, ambitious exploration goals and a recognisable visual identity. That public interest created an opportunity to extend mission communication beyond news, social media and educational materials into tangible products that supporters could buy and share.
The Rosetta Shop served as part of that wider public-engagement ecosystem, connecting the mission’s visual culture and storytelling with an accessible e-commerce experience.
My role
I worked as Website and Order Manager through Design & Data.
My responsibilities included:
- Managing the day-to-day operation of the Rosetta Shop website.
- Maintaining product pages, descriptions and catalogue information.
- Processing and coordinating customer orders.
- Monitoring order status and supporting fulfilment workflows.
- Helping ensure that shop information remained accurate and current.
- Supporting customer experience across the purchase and delivery process.
- Coordinating the operational work required for a public-facing online shop.
This role combined editorial care, digital administration and operational attention to detail.
Website management
A public-facing shop needs more than an attractive front end. Product listings must be clear, stock and availability information must be accurate, purchase paths must work reliably and customers must receive understandable updates.
My website-management work focused on maintaining a clear and dependable experience for visitors, including:
- Publishing and updating product content.
- Reviewing product descriptions and imagery.
- Maintaining navigation and shop structure.
- Checking that information was current and understandable.
- Supporting the connection between website listings and order workflows.
- Identifying and resolving routine operational issues.
Order management
Order management was a central part of the work.
The process extended beyond receiving an order. It required coordinating the information and actions needed to move from purchase to fulfilment while maintaining a clear record of customer requests and order status.
Key activities included:
- Reviewing incoming customer orders.
- Checking order details and product availability.
- Coordinating fulfilment and dispatch processes.
- Monitoring order progress.
- Responding to customer queries where required.
- Maintaining accurate information across the website and order records.
This operational work helped ensure that the shop matched the standards expected of an ESA-related public engagement initiative.
Communications value
The Rosetta Shop was not simply a retail channel. It supported public engagement with an important European space-science mission.
Mission merchandise can help audiences form a lasting connection with a project that may otherwise feel distant, technical or inaccessible. Products, visual identity and storytelling can carry a mission beyond the moment of a launch, landing or scientific announcement.
For Rosetta, this mattered because the mission had already become a powerful example of how space exploration, design and public communication can reinforce one another.
Contribution
My contribution was operational rather than scientific or spacecraft-related.
I did not design the Rosetta spacecraft, develop mission instruments or lead ESA’s science communications. Instead, I helped sustain an online platform that made the mission’s public-facing identity accessible through a functioning, well-managed e-commerce service.
The role required balancing two forms of responsibility:
- Digital quality: accurate, usable and well-maintained website content.
- Operational reliability: careful handling of orders and customer expectations.
Outcome
The project delivered a managed online shop for Rosetta-related merchandise and public engagement.
Key outcomes included:
- A maintained public-facing website.
- Updated product and catalogue information.
- Coordinated handling of customer orders.
- Support for a reliable purchase-to-fulfilment process.
- An additional route for audiences to connect with Rosetta and Philae.
Legacy
Rosetta remains one of ESA’s landmark science missions. Its exploration of comet 67P and deployment of Philae made it a defining public moment for European space science. ESA continues to present Rosetta and Philae as central parts of its space-science history. [web:240]
ESA also maintains official merchandise retailing through its broader ESA Shop, which presents ESA-branded products celebrating European space ambitions. [web:239]
